On Sunday 28/2 the Under 13s took part in a 100km swim challenge which was the 2nd big challenge event in the u13 calendar. Following the 10km Run Swim event in November, nippers were challenged to see if they could swim 100kms as a team within 5 hours. These events have been designed by AGM Pedro Smith to challenge the nippers (and parents) to think about what they can achieve as individuals and as teams while encouraging nippers to support each other when things get tough.
The event required nippers to swim laps of a 200 meter course at Leighton for five hours and after each lap tear a page out of a book they bought along to keep count. This concept was inspired by the Barkley UltraMarathon held in the US and helped to keep the fun and mischief in this tough event. A fabulous team of parents updated the score board and entertained spectators with updates and karaoke.
32 nippers and 26 allstars (family and friends) took part with some amazing results. Over 409km was swam by the group which was made up of 2045 laps of the course. The nippers smash out 234 kms, while consuming lots of snakes, noodles and snacks to keep them going. This was an amazing achievement by the team, many surprised at themselves at the distance they swam. Several nippers swam over 10kms!!
The smiles and tired bodies after the event reinforced the achievement that the group felt. Memories and lessons that will last much longer than the sore shoulders.
