It’s 5pm Friday 19th February at Point Peron Camp School – over 70 FSLSC Nippers make their way up the driveway, loaded with backpacks and sleeping bags and line up to sign in for Nipper Camp 2021. Plenty of excitement and anticipation was in the air.
Nipper camp is an annual club event that has been running for around two decades. Each season U11s, 12s & 13s have the opportunity to attend. Entirely run by volunteers, camp has a tradition of continuing to instil values of respect, fun, contribution, resilience, and teamwork. A handful of basic rules and positive encouragement see a great bunch of kids have a terrific weekend.
In age groups and mixed with other peers – camp participants surfed, swam, ran, snorkelled, jumped, dug, dashed, floated, played, problem solved, performed and even did the dishes.
A huge contingent from the U11s saw the youngest of the camper’s confident and ready to participate fully in their first camp.
The U12s – experienced from last year knew the ropes and learnt they can mix well with people they don’t know and even have fun. They showed a terrific sense of humour.
Finally, it was a pleasure to see our U13s deliver nurturing leadership qualities to their peers. Respect, creativity, kindness and strength oozed from these kids. Their final nipper camp saw them galvanised as a group once again.
Fair to say firm memories were made – with highlights surely being epic foxholes for Spotlight, snorkeling, surfing and the ever entertaining talent show.
By 10am Sunday morning, families collected their respective Nippers – who were all suitably exhausted from living their best life building friendships, pushing their limits and making great memories along the way.
A sincere thank you to our volunteers who generously gave their time, energy and experience to camp. A special mention to Tony Bowers, Jock, Kate Schick and Jack Hadley who demonstrated magic leadership that only previous camp & extensive surf club experience can give. These fine people together with Adam, Lucas, Niamh, Esther, Jonathan and Katrina made camp coordinating a dream.
In closing – a solid nod to all past camp organisers and volunteers who have collectively made the camp what it is today – and especially Whits, Gibbo & Seisha for handing over the baton eloquently.
